Woman accused of stealing $175,000 from Novato firm

A 34-year-old Napa woman has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling more than $175,000 from the Novato construction company where she worked as a bookkeeper, police said.

Kristy Lynn Gordon is in custody at the county jail in lieu of $250,000 bail. Prosecutors did not file charges Wednesday pending further review, and Gordon was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

The investigation began Friday when Gordon's employer, Tarrant Construction Inc. of Bel Marin Keys, told police it suspected the bookkeeper of stealing company funds. Gordon was arrested at work Tuesday morning.

Investigators suspect the embezzlement occurred from 1999 to the present, said Novato police Sgt. Keith Heiden. Police recovered items at Gordon's residence - including exercise equipment and electronics - they suspect were purchased with a stolen credit card, Heiden said.

More TB found at Sears headquarters

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Two more workers at the suburban Chicago headquarters of Sears Holdings Corp. have tested positive for tuberculosis, a report said Wednesday.

The discovery comes after employees of the Cook County Health Department conducted TB tests on 40 people who worked with a Sears employee who was treated for the disease, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Health department spokeswoman Kitty Loewy says it would be inaccurate to think that tuberculosis is spreading at Sears since people who travel frequently or those born outside the United States can have dormant TB for years.

Loewy says the woman discovered to have tuberculosis responded to drugs and is back at work.

Eva Longoria comedy lacks pulse

Over Her Dead Body is a gleefully daft project that not only has both Eva Longoria Parker and Jason Biggs in the same cast but centres on a jealous ghost, a confluence of idiotic elements that's impressive, you'll admit.

Mrs. Parker and Paul Rudd are Kate and Henry. They are deeply in love and getting married, but she dies on their wedding day. In keeping with the themes of the story, hers is a moronic sort of death.

Henry is heartbroken. Though Kate is dead, we saw enough of her in the first scene to know that she's an obsessive, bossy, nit-picking harridan, so -- yeah, who wouldn't miss her?

Henry's sister sends him off to a psychic named Ashley (Lake Bell), who is beautiful as well as prescient. Ashley will try to communicate with Kate's spirit in order to help Henry move on with his life.

Now this is a topic I am going to have fun with!!!!

A government green paper published yesterday said the age-12 rule will be introduced from October next year. But in 2010, the age limit will fall to seven. Ministers hope to sweeten the pill by promising more government assistance for lone parents who go to work. "Those lone parents who transfer to Jobseeker's Allowance will be expected to look for suitable work in return for personalized help and support," the paper said. "This will include improved childcare provision and help with identifying jobs with suitable flexible working arrangements." "This increased pressure on lone parents to seek work when their children are young is totally inappropriate," said Sue Robertson, director of One Parent Families Scotland. "Lone parents should retain the freedom to put their children first."

Please give a breather.

Tigers' 'other guy' Jones looks to help

I just start laughing," Jones said, looking to his right at the row of lockers that includes Cabrera and Ordonez, as well as Edgar Renteria, Gary Sheffield and Carlos Guillen.

"It's like an All-Star convention. Those guys can hit. Those guys can play."

With those guys around, it is easy to get overlooked, even when your manager begins the spring by predicting that you are going to have a big year.

Jim Leyland said just that about Jacque Jones, the "other guy" the Tigers traded for last winter.

"I think quietly he's been a big addition," Leyland said. "I know we haven't played yet, but I think he's going to be a huge addition."

What a contrast

It's slowly dawning on the liberals that it's not going to be enough to ignore Ronald Reagan. Like it or not, they're going to have to take him on, head-first, and try to convince the American people, or at least the historians of his era, that he was a fundamentally bad guy.

I don't envy them the job. Reagan was an immensely popular president. Not long after his retirement I told him, in a private conversation, that I thought his historical popularity would follow the trajectory of most of his predecessors' -- declining somewhat at first, then rising again till he assumed at last his proper place in the presidential pantheon.

I was wrong. Right from the start, after he left the White House, commentators on both the right and the left have recognized him as one of the major presidents of the 20th century, who shaped the country's policies and future in important ways.
