Still Fighting for Affirmative Action

The story notes that there has been no legal arguments made, so it is impossible to tell what will be made in court. It may well be that the school's able attorneys return with a simple, “Nothing we can do here."

The Suit by the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action – the complaint can be found here: http://www.bamn.com/doc/2006/061108-complaint-prop2.pdf – alleges that there is no way to reconcile the Michigan Constitution with the US Constitution (and statutes passed pursuant to it). Whether they are correct or not, will be for the courts to decide. However, the drafters of the Michigan amendment were careful to put in provisions which stated that it cleaved to the 14th amendment. So, the flexibility of the Michigan amendment may be its strong point, but result in University's interpreting it to actually require no changes.

Super Bowl Stars Sing on Gospel Music Channel This Weekend

A 90-minute Super Bowl Gospel Celebration 2008 TV special will world premiere exclusively on the Gospel Music Channel television network this Saturday, February 9th at 9:00 pm ET/PT.

The Super Bowl Gospel Celebration 2008 was recorded live at Symphony Hall in Phoenix, AZ, site of Super Bowl XLII, last Friday, Feb. 1. Tyree and Watson joined players and coaches representing all 32 NFL teams, including All-Pro's Baltimore Ravens Linebacker Ray Lewis and Chicago Bears Defensive tackle Tommie Harris, to form the choir. The choir was lead by gospel legend Donnie McClurkin, who co-hosted the show along with David Mann, aka Mr. Brown from Tyler Perry's House of Payne television series and Perry's movies. Patti Labelle, CeCe Winans, Marvin Winans and Martha Munizzi were among the featured performers of Super Bowl Gospel Celebration 2008, the only gospel event sanctioned by the National Football League for Super Bowl Weekend.

GYPSY OF THE MONTH: Jim Borstelmann of 'Young Frankenstein'

Its an exclusive club of performers who have portrayed multiple roles in one movie: Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Jim Borstelmann... When the musical The Producers was adapted for film, Borstelmann got to repeat all the featured bits he had played on stage, including Scott, Roger DeBris purple-clad choreographer with a crotch bulge; Donald Dinsmore, the lamebrain in coke-bottle glasses who auditions to play Hitler; and the lead Bavarian peasant in Springtime for Hitler.

Hes sort of the Lon Chaney of this film, Producers director Susan Stroman says on the DVD commentary. Over another scene, she remarks that Borstelmann is a wonderful comic, and a beautiful dancer.

When Stroman reteamed with The Producers creators for their follow-up, Young Frankenstein, they invented a character for Borstelmann to portray: Ziggy, the village idiot.

MOTOR CITY STRUTTIN'

In downtown Detroit Friday night, all roads led to Cobo Center and the 39th annual auto show Charity Preview.

Neither the $400 price tag nor the biting cold was any concern on this gilded evening, where evening gowns in rainbow tones competed with gleaming, candy-colored cars.

Clearly enjoying herself was Aretha Franklin, who said she had just been out with her entourage for dinner at Wolfgang Puck's at the MGM Grand. ("The food was wonderful!")
