Adrienne Kennedy Inaugurates PUBLIC LAB

Hot off the griddle.

That's a culinary way of describing PUBLIC LAB, a new play series jointly birthed by the Public Theater and the LAByrinth Theater Company and running at the Public's Lafayette Street complex through June.

The goal is to present new works quickly — with minimal stage design and a short rehearsal period. Tickets are a wallet-friendly $10 each.

Up first is "Mom, How Did You Meet the Beatles?" The memoir, currently running through Feb. 23, is by Adam P. Kennedy and his mother, noted playwright Adrienne Kennedy, best known for her "Funnyhouse of a Negro."

The 65-minute production, directed by Peter DuBois, is a recollection of Adrienne Kennedy's time in London in the late 1960s, specifically when she was attempting a theatrical adaptation of John Lennon's nonsense book, "In His Own Write."

As played by actress Brenda Pressley, the playwright recounts what she calls "my search for fame and fortune," and her brush with such English celebrities as Laurence Olivier as well as all four Beatles.

Early morning blaze strikes Natchez Hotel

The Democrat most likely knew it when the call went in for the FireDept. They have a scanner just like a lot of people, but they didn't print the report on the web site until they comfirmed it with the Fire Chief. If they made a news flash everytime the Fire Dept. goes on a call you'd get tired of it really turning out to be nothing much to report about. Thanks Democrat for getting confirmation first.

Committee upholds certification decision in Aberdeen election

Last Monday, the Democratic Election Committee announced that it would not be certifying Willie Cook or Kennedy Meaders for the citys April 1 election.

A meeting was set aside on Wednesday if those candidates wanted to contest that ruling. Cook did. Meaders, who would have been a candidate for police chief, did not attend.

Coy Flynn, committee chairman, opened the meeting and said, Were here to hear what Willie Cook has to say about us not certifying him.
Cook asked why the committee did not certify him. He was not certified, the committee said, because he does not live in the Ward he qualified in, Ward 3. Committee member Bob Miller said pictures had been taken of the house he has in Ward 3 and that prior to that day, the pictures showed it to be vacant.

Lubavitch Chabad defers its dream

For months, people living near the southwest corner of Clark and Chestnut wondered about the hole in the ground. The owner, Lubavitch Chabad, planned a Center for Jewish Life on the site, but couldn't raise the money.

Apparently deferring its dream of a new building, the organization has a tentative agreement to sell the property to Chicago-based LG Development Group. Ariel Weissberg, attorney for Lubavitch Chabad, said LG wants to build a 15- to 20-story condo building with just two high-end units per floor. The Chabad, he said, may look at other sites to build a spiritual sanctuary.

The property is part of a planned development that requires any developer to obtain the consent of neighbors before building. Talks are under way, Weissberg said, noting that downtown Ald.
