Paper tiger on the prowl

It wasn't easy but we have come a long way," said Harbinder, who founded the Asian Pacific Post in 1993 on little more than a dream.

At a time when newspaper barons are fighting to correct declining circulations by turning to digital alternatives, Harbinder is plugging ahead with his print products, forming unique alliances to increase the reach of his boutique periodicals.

“I have ink in my blood," confides the maverick entrepreneur.

Harbinder arrived in Canada from his native Malaysia in the early 90s, by way of Bangkok, where he ran a clothing business, New Zealand, where he lived with the native Maoris as a fruit picker, and after backpacking through Europe.

“I wanted to see the world and my dad was very supportive."

In Tanjung Tualang, Harbinder's dad, Sewa Singh, was a dredge master with six children in a British-run tin mine.

Roseau's first trip to girls' state hockey tourney is a doozy

Getting to the girls' hockey state tournament is one thing. But as the Roseau Rams have learned, getting there is another matter.

The Roseau boys have been to a record 31 state tournaments, but this is the first time for the girls. And boy, will they have some stories to tell.

The team bus left Roseau at 6:30 Tuesday morning for the 6 1/2-hour drive to St. Paul. There was plenty of time to check in at their hotel, change from warmups to dresses and attend a 7 p.m. banquet for the eight-team Class 1A field.

Problem No. 1: The heater on the bus was shooting blanks.

"It was fairly chilly," coach Brian Bergstrom said Wednesday at Xcel Energy Center. "We could see our breath."

Problem No. 2: The bus blew a front tire south of St.

Buddy Miles , a rock and R&B drummer best known for the song "Them Changes," died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his home in Austin, Texas. He was 60. Miles' career was closely entwined with that of his friend Jimi Hendrix , for whom he played on "Electric Ladyland" and in the group Band of Gypsies. Miles' career started with early '60s groups like Ruby and the Romantics; he was a part of Mike Bloomfield 's supergroup Electric Flag as well. As a studio musician he played with Carlos Santana , Stevie Wonder and David Bowie .

Ledger bared his soul

Anyone who met Heath Ledger couldn't help getting the impression the actor basically was both a gentle soul and a very sensitive guy.

Now I've learned the Australian native expressed that sensitivity by writing poetry and even a few song lyrics.

A longtime Ledger associate told me Thursday, ''Heath wrote some really amazing poems ... as good as any I've read.'' According to this insider, the actor penned verse ranging from ''very funny, often naughty doggerel,'' usually to mark a pal's birthday or some other kind of special occasion, to ''very deep, insightful pieces that showed how much he had going on inside.''

While my source expressed the hope the more serious Ledger poetry might be published, she did say the journals containing the work were in the hands of ex-girlfriend Michelle Williams, the mother of Ledger's 2-year-old daughter.
