The lowlights: the fallout from a loss of airline flights and last year's 30 percent downturn in the real estate hot spot of the past several years -- Padre Island. Roland Mower, CEO of the Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation; Keith Arnold, president and CEO of the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau; and Gene Guernsey, real estate agent with Remax Metro Properties, met with members of the Corpus Christi Rotary Club on Thursday to discuss their forecasts. "I really think we are setting up 2009, 2010 and other years for a really good housing market," Guernsey said. "I think the housing market will remain a buyer's market, and we will have about an eight-month inventory. It will continue to be strong compared with national figures." Month-supply inventories ranging from six to nine months -- meaning the houses take that long to sell -- are considered balanced markets.
Man pleads not guilty to charge of assaulting Bennington police ...
BENNINGTON A $10,000 bail was set on a man arraigned in Bennington District Court on Wednesday for assaulting a law enforcement officer. Christopher Russell, 17, pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, petit larceny and violating his conditions of release. The bail was imposed on him by Judge Katherine Hayes. "The allegations strongly suggest that Mr. Russell has a pattern of violating court orders," said Hayes of the reason she set the high bail. Russell also withdrew a guilty plea for burglary. According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Officer Anthony Silvestro, police responded to South Street on Feb. 17 at around 6:30 p.m. for a report of someone who might be wanted by police. Confrontation at door Silvestro said the complainant called and told police that Russell was at his residence, and asked if there was a warrant out for Russell's arrest.

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd's historic ideas summit will look at slashing the number of bars in Australia and reducing their opening hours to break the binge drinking culture gripping the nation. One of the summit's hand-picked leaders, Tim Costello, said yesterday access to alcohol in Australia was too easy and tackling the problem would be high on his agenda at the April summit in Canberra. "There are far too many outlets," he said. "Closing times need to be adjusted. The way we serve alcohol in a responsible way, the codes for serving alcohol, need to be tightened." Amid growing evidence of a drinking epidemic, Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital said yesterday the number of drunken louts turning up injured had quadrupled in the past five years. Emergency Department director Phillip Kay said the main offenders were young men aged 17 to 25, although some were as young as 14.
Family trying to cope with tragedy
She not only suffered third-degree burns over nearly half of her body, but her husband, Howard Emmitt, 25, and elder son,12-year-old Cadarian Herd, died. Tears rolled down her face as she recalled the tragedy. "I thought it was a dream," Emmitt said. "I tried to close my eyes and wake up. But it wasn't." After spending almost four months in the burn unit at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Emmitt is living with her two surviving children in her mother's small two-bedroom south Houston apartment. "I'm blessed that the Lord spared my life so I could take care of my two children," Emmitt said. Ciara Herd, 9, and Howard Emmitt Jr., 3, survived the fire, but the little boy suffered burns on his hand. "But it's hard, it's really hard." The most difficult part of coming home from the hospital was wondering how her children would react to her appearance, Emmitt said.

Langston Hughes Lecture to focus on civil rights predecessor
When Randal Jelks was seven years old, the city of New Orleans closed the community swimming pool near his boyhood home. The pool's dry, cracked concrete was Jelks' daily reminder of the divided world he lived in. Jelks' skin was too dark to swim in that pool. “Six years," Jelks said. “They didn't want black kids swimming in the pool." .
Britney Spears
The above picture is a simulation of how Britney Spears will look at age 36. It was done by the folks at www.ageprogession.org who factored in Britney's current fast food diet, drug and alcohol use and apparently receding hair line. They also produced a shot of Britney at 46 who I guess, in the midst of a mid-life crisis, decided being blonde is sexier. These pictures are pretty amazing considering I always pictured Britney buried in a coffin by 30. Thanks to science I now know she'll lead a rich, full life surrounded by cats and old copies of Readers Digest. Outstanding. .
