| California hotels earn most stars in new Mobil guide
The editors of the Mobil Travel Guide, now in its 50th edition, have stars in their eyes when it comes to California. The Golden State tops the list of five-star hotels, with nine entries; New York comes closest with five, all but one in New York City. California also numbers 26 four-star hotels, with nearest rival Florida offering only 16. San Francisco has three of Mobil's five-star hotels, all of them chains: the Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis and Four Seasons. Apart from Chateau du Sureau in Oakhurst (south of Yosemite), the rest of California's top hotels are in the southern half of the state: the Beverly Hills Hotel and the nearby Raffles L'Ermitage and Peninsula hotels; the St. Regis Resort, Monarch Beach, in Dana Point (Orange County); and the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles.
Former Naperville lawyer Glink dies
Marvin Glink made his mark on every level of municipal law. Whether it was in Naperville, as his firm represented the municipality during the 1960s to '70s timeframe, or through his activities in the International Municipal Lawyers Association, Glink approached life by being all-giving to every person. "He did give back to others," said Glink's wife, Peg. "In Naperville, he started as a charter member of the Rotary-Sunrise Club and was very active in that. Then when we moved to Arizona he became active here. He has just been involved in one project after another in his life, in all types of charitable organizations." Glink, a former Naperville resident, died Feb. 7 in Rio Verde, Ariz., at age 79. Glink, who received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and his law degree from Chicago Kent College of Law, was an original partner in what is now known as the Ancel, Glink, Diamond, Bush, DiCanni and Krafthefer firm.
Pauline Fitzgerald; the force behind famed JFK tea parties
When Henry Cabot Lodge lost his US Senate seat to John F. Kennedy in 1952, he reportedly blamed "those damn tea parties" for the defeat. The organizer of those famous informal, meet-the-candidate gatherings, Polly Fitzgerald, drew inspiration from Lodge's remark. She later oversaw events for Kennedy's White House bid and for the campaigns of his brothers Edward and Robert, playing a key role in helping to build the vaunted political dynasty. Pauline (McNamara) Fitzgerald, whom the Kennedys called "Cousin Polly," died of a stroke Feb. 1 at Fox Hill Village in Westwood, where she had lived for two years. She was 88 and previously lived in Needham and Osterville. "Polly was a dear cousin and a wonderful friend to me and to my parents, my sisters, and my brothers, and will be deeply missed," Senator Edward M.
Newcastle? Special? Sorry
You believe that no other club exists with the same passion or emotion and your sincerity is appreciated. It is just that, well, you are wrong. Sorry. Whether blighted by tragedy or blessed by glory, whether filling a stadium with tens of thousands or surviving on a pittance and the devotion of a handful of diehards, just as you feel about your football club, so do millions of others. Everyone thinks that they have the prettiest wife at home, as Arsène Wenger said. Everyone thinks that they have the love supreme. But if everybody is special, then nobody is. So, Liverpool: not special. Manchester United: not special. Luton Town: not special. West Ham United: not special. Newcastle United: not special. Sorry. Kevin Keegan talked a grand game in his opening address at St James’ Park.
More caution, less ego can be difference between life, death
Personally, I believe we could use a little more of it. The second avalanche death in eight days occurred over the weekend in the backcountry adjacent to Vail Mountain known as the East Vail Chutes, a place I've skied on and off with friends for the better part of a decade. The Jan. 4 death of 27-year-old Jesse Brigham came as a surprise to none of them. For different reasons, the death Friday of 33-year-old Matthew Gustafson did. While my condolences go out to family and friends of both, we shouldn't let the lessons from these tragedies die with them. In terms of protocol, both these guys and the parties they skied with appeared to do many things right. They had all the gear. They did some basic stability tests. They skied with partners and dropped in one at a time. But the question I hear — and find myself asking — time and again is, "What the heck were they doing there in the first place?" I understand the allure of the backcountry, or, in the case of East Vail, what I'd consider sidecountry.
