CD 101.9 drops jazz

D-For and the list could on and on. I buy this music and listen at home or on CD in my car because I couldn't get it on your radio station. If you could take a poll, I think you would find that I am not alone. Until the program directors start being aggressive in finding new music and and be willing to give the listeners a chance to hear the music, I have the feeling that the fate of smooth jazz on radio is doomed. You lost some your audience to satellite radio because of this. People are actually paying to hear new and varied music. You think they would have stayed if they could have got the same music for free? How many people have attend the Liberty Jazz Festival? That should give you a clue that the fans/listeners are there. You just have to give them a better reason than Al Green and Sade to listen.

How Kevin Federline took his place among the world's most powerful men

Yes, the radical Shia cleric can only manage eighth spot, marked down for what we can only assume is an absence of cod-mystical tattoos and his failure to "bring it" in console-related activity.

Bad news, too, for YouTube founders Steven Chen and Chad Hurley (13), and there'll be tears before bedtime in Syria, whose president, Bashar Assad, limps in at 21. Nothing's upsetting the High School Musical imperium, though: a bunch of dancing kids top the entire list.

But it's K-Fed's showing that effectively skyrockets the exercise to No 1 in the list of Stupidest Power Lists Ever - a position previously held by British GQ for claiming that David Beckham was more powerful than Rupert Murdoch. (And this was in 2001, before David bought all the satellites. I suppose the equivalent nowadays would be observing that Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page lack the clout of Frank Lampard.)

Anyways, foolhardy readers may ask, what of Britney, the Melinda Gates to K-Fed's Bill? Well, this week we have rumours of a far east adoption raid, and a detailed description of the singer's "fantasy room", a specially designated sex room in her Mulholland Drive home.

RIGHTS-US: Rendition Victim Appeals Ruling Barring Suit

The head of the RCMP was forced to resign because of the incident. Arar received an official apology and a multi-million-dollar settlement from the Canadian government earlier this year.

Arar's lawyer, David Cole of the Georgetown University Law Centre, underlined the importance of the current appeal. He told IPS, "The Canadians, who provided misinformation about Arar but did not acquiesce in sending him to Syria, have conducted a full investigation, written an 1,100-page report, formally apologised, and awarded Mr. Arar 10 million dollars in damages and legal fees. Meanwhile the United States, the far more culpable actor, maintains that it violated no rights, and that Mr. Arar has no remedy."

Cole is working with the Centre for Constitutional Rights, an advocacy group, in the Arar case.

Paris discovers its playboy President

For many, Sarkozy's defiance of the rules is refreshing in a country still governed by a rigid social structure and an unspoken adherence to class etiquette. In a nation that prides rarefied intellect and venerates philosophers, Sarkozy portrays himself as a bruiser, a scrapper, a contender. One photographer recently commissioned to take his portrait for an American newspaper recalls that he spent the entire interview tilting his chair back on two legs, like a bored teenager. 'There was a sort of vulgarity to him and you felt he enjoyed it. He had a large plate of sliced saucisson in front of him that he ate all through the interview without offering it to anyone else.'

For all his gumption and glitz, Sarkozy's dramatic transformation of presidential office has been met in some quarters by a snobbish disapprobation of 'la peopolisation' of French politics.

Web services slash CO2 emissions

The savings come through a reduced need for people to travel to council offices to make enquiries or submit paperwork, or for staff to move between locations.

If the figure is scaled up for the rest of the country, it would mean a reduction in CO2 emissions of 14,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to 5,362 return flights from Heathrow to Malaga in Spain.

The research is based on data supplied by Sunderland City Council relating to web services for planning, schools admission, registrars' certificates, environmental service enquiries and council tax payments.

In addition, the reduction in CO2 due to the web services is significantly higher than the extra CO2 generated by the increased server requirements.

Parmjit Dhanda, minister for e-government, said people should be encouraged to talk to their local authority via the web due to these benefits.

Pick ‘n’ roll: Thursday’s best NBA bets

These teams are polar opposites. The Heat have dropped nine straight contests and are 23.5 games off the pace at the bottom of the NBA Southeast, while Houston has won nine straight and is just four games back in the NBA Southwest.

There is also major disparity between how each team is doing against the spread. Miami has covered just twice on its current losing streak, while the Rockets have won against the spread in six of their last seven.

Houston has won and covered in two of its last three meetings against Miami and that trend is likely to continue when they meet on Thursday night.

Pick: Miami

San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves (+8, 179)

The Spurs won six of nine games on a difficult road trip ahead of the All-Star break, so Thursday's road game in Minnesota won't be too daunting for them.
