Kosher restaurant to reopen after blaze

A popular kosher restaurant in Golders Green will reopen this week, almost four months after it was gutted by fire.

Solly's, in Golders Green Road, was severely damaged in the blaze on September 24, last year.

It led some fans of the restaurant, which has been a favourite of residents for almost 20 years, to brand it "truly a tragic day for food lovers".

A Facebook group, set up to "mourn the loss of Solly's", has almost 1,000 members, who have posted their memories and comments about the restaurant, along with any updates or theories as to what caused the fire.

Manager of Solly's, Menashe Gavish said he expected the takeaway area to open tonight (January 15), and the rest of the ground floor to be opening tomorrow.

"It has taken a lot of cleaning but it is now first class and will look tip-top with great food," he said.

NIU Gunman's Contradictions Baffle Police

MADISON, Wis. (CBS) ― Steven Kazmierczak had the look of a boyish graduate student - except for the disturbing tattoos that covered his arms. Professors and students knew him as a bright, helpful scholar, but his past included a stint in a mental health center. Many saw him as happy and stable, but he had developed a recent interest in guns and was involved in a troubled - possibly abusive - on-again, off-again relationship. What people initially told police about the Northern Illinois University shooter didn't add up, and now investigators are searching for answers to what triggered Thursday's bloody attack, in which five students were killed and several more injured before Kazmierczak committed suicide. While searching for a motive, authorities questioned family and friends and tried to determine whether he had recently broken up with his longtime girlfriend. One person who knew the couple, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, said the couple's relationship was on-again, off-again and "really rocky." Kazmierczak was controlling, she said."He was abusive, had a temper," she said.

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A devastating cyclone on the southwestern coast of Bangladesh has killed more than 260 people and displaced thousands of others.

The storm, which made landfall Thursday evening, has left at least 500 fishing trawlers -- staffed by more than 3,000 fisherman -- missing, PTI reported Friday.

Officials said Bangladeshi Army troops and Air Force helicopters were called in to assist with rescue operations.

The officials said the Barguna district was one of the hardest-hit by the storm, with 118 people in the area killed. Reports are still pending from some areas affected by the cyclone, including the Khulna and Barisal districts and the island of Dubla Chor.

Meanwhile, the country's weather office said the sun was shining Friday, but there was a chance of rain later in the day, as the storm continues to flounder north of the country's coast in a weakened form, PTI said.

Broadcast crews get the chills for conference title games

Living in perhaps the best climate in the world, it's hard for people in Southern California to realize it actually is winter in other parts of the world. That fact should be dramatically driven home Sunday as the Chargers travel to Foxborough, Mass., for the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots while the New York Giants visit northern Wisconsin to play the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game.Sunday's weather forecast in Foxborough calls for highs in the low 20s and lows in the single digits. There is only a 10 percent chance of snow, but the forecast calls for winds above 20 mph.And while the players will be uncomfortable, the announcers, cameramen and technicians who bring us the telecasts will be equally uncomfortable, perhaps even more so."Our crews are experienced in cold weather," said Lance Barrow, the game producer for CBS' coverage of Sunday's Chargers-Patriots game.

The young mother's joy, however, turned to sorrow on Saturday as a bomb detonated as Joshua Reeves' Humvee drove down a Baghdad street. Leslie Reeves was still in the hospital with her new baby when she learned she was a widow.

"Everyone is just deeply saddened," said Paula Fortner, owner of Hendersonville's American Academy of Dance.

Leslie, who has danced since the age of six, was a former student of the academy as well as a teacher there as recently as two days before her delivery. Her mother, Marikay Burke, is the office manager at the studio.

Fortner said an account has been set up to help Reeves and her newborn son at any Regions Bank.

Pastor Tim Reynolds of Hendersonville's First Presbyterian Church was all set to visit the new baby in the hospital Saturday when he received a call that Joshua Reeves had been killed.
