Trouble in pews of S.F.'s Glide Memorial Church

Glide Memorial isn't just a San Francisco church. For over 44 years, it's been a rollicking Sunday morning gospel jam session, an A-list celebrity drop-by (Sen. Dianne Feinstein was at the 9 a.m. service last Sunday)and a must-see tourist stop.

But lately, there have been rumors of trouble in the pews. Longtime supporters reluctantly admit that some of them are experiencing a crisis of faith.

"It's very sad to see," said Thomas Harris, a former member of the Glide Foundation board of directors who is an executive with Genentech Inc., who has left the church, "but I knew it was going to unravel at some point."

At issue is the concern that has been looming over the multimillion-dollar operation (a 2004 Chronicle story pegged the annual budget at $11.9 million) for almost eight years: Who will replace the church's legendary founder and spiritual guru, the Rev.

New European collaboration portal is launched

To achieve its goals, i-techpartner uses a number of regional and pan-European events and its new interactive online community with search facilities to screen and match participants. Initially, the participating European regions will showcase their best research projects from local Universities and research centres. With hands-on advice of innovation experts, the commercial aspects of these projects will be fine-tuned. The most advanced and most promising research projects and applications will be presented to potential strategic partners and industry experts on a pan-European level in order to establish international collaboration and technology transfer. Networking facilities are backed by online tools to maintain the flow of information and communication between participants. Especially Europe's regions and regional development agencies can help local researchers and young innovative companies to become successful leaders in their field.

Sea lions return to Audubon Zoo

Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, the sea lions at Audubon Zoo in New Orleans were evacuated to rather comfy digs. Two animals were sent to the Houston Zoo, with three others taking up temporary residence at Moody Gardens in Galveston. Later Moody Gardens took the two sea lions from Houston, bringing the group together again.

This past week the five sea lions — Cinnamon, Katie, Sushi, Lilli and Porter — returned to their newly renovated Oldenheimer Sea Lion Pool at Audubon Zoo.

The sea lion pool is one of the zoo’s most beloved attractions and is located in one of the zoo’s historic areas. The sea lion staff trains with all of the animals every day. The sea lions learn all the same commands, but each animal has a different response. Each animal knows how to wave a flipper, but each one has his or her own wave.

As some of you already know, I am an Ohio State Buckeye fan who resides in the Heart of Texas among some of the most die hard and passionate fans in this country...Texas Longhorn fans! The College football fan base in general is the most interesting group of sports fans to observe. In my opinion they are more colorful and crazed than any Professional Football, Baseball, Basketball, or Hockey fan base and the Texas Longhorn fan is indeed an interesting breed. The University of Texas is located in the great city of Austin. One of the coolest cities in the United States. Known for it's hospitable atmosphere and great night life. It has been called the "Live Music Capitol of the World" and I've have found that to be true. But on Saturdays in the fall it's all about the Longhorns. These fans truly bleed burnt orange.

Online Photos Not as Private as Assumed

Depending on the site, there are a number of options as to who can blog, download or print your pictures.

"People should look before they leap and spend a little bit of time understanding how a particular site works," Dempsey said.

If you add a caption or name a photo, know that the keywords might pop up in a Internet search someday. Google's Picasa, for example, has a "searchable" option for those who want to share their pictures with the world.

Photo-sharing Web sites recommend that users test their privacy settings by having a friend try to break into their private photo albums to see if the pictures are thoroughly hidden.

"If you don't want the Flickr community to view a photo, take the extra step to make sure the photo is marked as private," Karlsten said.
